Western Red Cedar is a light weight alternative to Englemann Spruce and very stiff. It is preferred by some instrument makers since it more stable than Spruce, and thus is less subject to shrinkage cracks. Colours range from white to red to, the rarest, chocolate. Grain is straight with a coarse texture and moderate natural lustre. Specific gravity 0.31, Janka Hardness 350.
